ROKA

Roka Ceremony – The first step towards marriage & a union of two families

Roka is one of the most significant ceremonies that take place prior to an Indian wedding. It is also referred as Sagai in Haryana, Roka in Punjab, Sakhar Puda in Maharashtra, Kasamdry among Kashmiri Pandits, Tilak among Marwaris, Nishchayam or Nishchaya Thamboolam in South India, Ghor Dana among Gujaratis and Engagement in few other part of India. Roka ceremony marks the union of both the bride and groom’s family and friends. Typically both families exchange gifts and bless the happy couple before they embark on their future together.

Indian Roka ceremony brings about the official announcement of the consent of both the boy and the girl for getting married to each other. It’s the beginning of the wedding ceremonies which are to follow. It is the first step taken towards making the marriage decision official among the family and friends.
Usually, traditional ethnic Wear is selected as the Roka ceremony attire. The boy may wear designer suit, kurta and pajama the girl on the other hand, can choose from among saree, salwar suit or lehenga choli. The guests also prefer to follow the ethnic theme of dressing and dress up traditionally.

HALDI

The Haldi ceremony is a very common and important ritual among almost all communities in India. Turmeric is ground to a paste along with other ingredients that vary from culture to culture. This paste in applied to both the bride’s and groom at their respective places by women elderly members of their families before they are washed by sacred water. The Haldi Ceremony is known by many a name across the country, Gaye Holud among Bengalis, Pithi among Gujaratis and Mangala Snanam among Tamilians

MEHNDI

Mehndi is yet another traditional yet exciting pre wedding ceremony. Mehndi is one of the sixteen adornments of the bride and her beauty is incomplete without it. Mehndi ceremony carried out just before wedding ceremony. According to the ritual, after Mehndi ceremony, bride is not allowed to step out of the house till marriage ceremony. Mehndi ceremony is organised by the family of the bride and is usually a private affair which takes place in the presence of friends, relatives and family members.

Word Mehendi is derived from a Sanskrit word ‘mendhika’ which referred to the henna plant, and in the bible, henna is referred to a Camphire. Body arts from Mehndi is famous across the nations in and around Asia. Use of Mehndi is considered immensely auspicious in many traditions around the world, especially within Hindus, who would consider Mehndi part of the customary 16 adornments or Solah Shringaar.
